I can't see that it matters either way. If God loved the world at all, it wouldn't be
in the state it's in.

Interesting take on John 3:16
by NikL inthe superstar of all scriptures.
for god so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.. .
but i just learned something about it.. i try to look at different translations of the bible and the lexham english bible words it a bit different.... 16 for in this way god loved the world, so that he gave his one and only son, in order that everyone who believes in him will not perish, but will have eternal life.

Two (circumstantial) lines of evidence for the real motivation behind the Russian lobbying?
by doubtfull1799 in1. in bro sandersons latest video (in which he shows a very impressive skill with russian) he mentions two likely results of the imminent russian ban: the liquidation of the branch office and its assets, and the individual brothers capacity to worship freely.
no prizes for guessing which one gets mentioned first!.
2. why have the gb never attempted in the past, and are not interested in attempting now, such a letter writing campaign in other communist countries where the work is under similar restrictions, like china, or vietnam?

During the letter writing campaign for Malawi, we were instructed to contact all government officials living in our territory to ask them to join the letter writing campaign. I was new, and diligently followed that instruction, seeking out all local/district/county councillors, and giving them the templates we had.
If your average Dub was asked to write to political leaders on behalf of any other group, say Syrian refugees, they would say, "sorry, can't help, it would compromise my political neutrality".
Wouldn't it be great if they widened their campaign and started asking the public in general to join them? I would love to see their face when they knock on my door and I tell them I can't help because I'm politically neutral.

Close, Critical Analysis of "Should Others Make Decisions for Us"
by cognisonance inshould others make decisions for us?.
) we should not give someone else the responsibility to make decisions for us.
rather, we should personally learn what is right in god’s eyes and choose to do it.. how might we give in to the danger of letting others choose for us?

It is the same with your conscience. You can only follow it on matters that they say are OK. So in the days when alternative service was a no no, anyone whose conscience allowed them to do it, instead had to abandon their families and serve a prison sentence instead, even if that action went against their conscience.
I have always found it amusing that the WT must have a view on almost everything, and dubs must conform, even when the issue has no bearing at this time. A prime example of this is, “will those destroyed at Sodom and Gomorrah be resurrected?” Even though the answer to that question has depended on what year in which you ask it, dubs must fall in line with the prevailing view. I once asked a dub that called on me, “Why does the WT have a view at all? Why don’t they just say, ‘we don’t know’? We don’t need to know.” His answer was, “we are a united people and we must have unity”. So sad really.

undeserved kindness vs. grace
by nowwhat? inundeserved kindness means- you puny humans are irredemable and worthless, but because i am such a benevolent and magnanimous god.
i give you a way for salvation.
but you better keep working day in and day out for the rest of your miserable lives and perhaps i'll save you on my day of wrath.

Yes, another example of how Freddie "translated" the bible to fit the Watchtower slant.

It's worth bearing in mind that this debate over 606 v 587 is not new. In the October 1st Watchtower 1904 page 296 (RP 3436) Russell published a letter, which said (in part);
"Dear Sir, … You count the seventy years Babylonian captivity of the Jews as beginning with the overthrow of Zedekiah, Judah's last king, but I notice that "Bishop Usher's Chronology," … based on "Ptolemy's Canon," begins that seventy-year period nineteen years earlier … this in turn would make those times end nineteen years later than you have reckoned – in October, A. D. 1933, instead of October, 1914. "
Russell's reply was,
"We know of no reason for changing a figure: to do so would spoil the harmonies and parallels so conspicuous between the Jewish and Gospel ages. "
He then goes on to explain the damage it would do the their other years 1874, 1876 as well as 1914 and concludes with the statement,
"All this confusion would result from an abandonment of the Bible narrative in favor of Ptolemy's Canon"
So Russell did not chose 606 because of any empirical evidence, he chose it to support his pre-conceived ideas of parallel dispensations in his "Divine Plan of The Ages". And that's how it's been ever since.

In all honesty punkofnice, I don't think the WT's current crop of writers have the imagination to dream up a new interpretation of any of those old prophecies so beloved of Freddy Franz. But if they do you can be sure that they will say (as they did about Freddie's 1958 book , “Your Will Be Done on Earth") that it “points with unerring accuracy to their counterparts in today’s struggle for world control.” (Watchtower, October 15, 1958, page 640).

Skinned and Thrown About.....
by Tech49 inthis is a little long, but stick with me.. if you recall, when the building work was in full swing at the new lakefront villa (warwick), wt was having workers come and they would put them up for a year, or more, while they were providing "volunteer services".
with that, and the impending need for hundreds and hundreds of new khs in the usa territory, the congregations were abuzz with the need for "continued construction volunteers".
recently, as many of you know, wt headquarters has sent pretty much everyone home, and is no longer needing workers at the new warwick site, as the building is mostly complete, with the dedication coming up later this year.

they can flip to Malachi
Seems an odd choice of book to me as it's easy to find, being the last one in the OT. Not that I remember it ever being quoted from.

How do JW's determine a person is anointed?
by thinker11 ini've always wondered about this.
when a person believes they made a spiritual connection with god and proclaims themselves as anointed, how do they determine whether this person is anointed or not.
does a group of elders look at the person's spiritual resume and check off the person's pioneer stats, bible knowledge, attendance, work ethic, personality, etc and then believe in the person if they have a good track record?

Back in the 70s there were two people in my congregation that took the emblems, a dear old lady and a peculiar guy in his late 50s or early 60s. This guy was ‘in the truth’ long before I arrived, but he never ‘advanced’ in it. He was never a servant of any kind, never gave public talks, not even the School Instruction talk, and hardly ever answered at meetings. He was generally regarded as dubious, although no one would come outright and say they doubted his claim. I was the School servant for a while and on one occasion I had to ‘council’ him for his talk. I should have just said it was good, with some meaningless platitudes, but I was conscientiously honest and told him the truth (I was also only 26). After the meeting he took me aside and swearing like a trooper told me what a f-ing jerk I was, unfit for my role, and that I was in no position to tell him anything. I was actually quite pleased with his reaction, as it just confirmed my doubts about the ‘truth’, and about a year later I was out.
